Rub Me Down

October 27, 2009 · 3 Comments

I am sitting here praying that the clock moves just a bit QUICKER.

why?

Cause I have a massage scheduled at 3pm today. I can’t WAIT. My triceps are so sore..they’re aching. Like it’s hard to pick-up a coffee cup.

Since I went running last night, I am taking tonight off. I have to finish decorating a cake for my co-worker and then baby-sit (birth control) a cute little 3 month old tyke. I love kids, I love babies. But I am NOT ready to have any yet.

This morning, cause I don’t have any rice flakes left and/or rice milk I had a fruit salad w/ 10 almonds and 1 tsp. flax seed.

P1013173

Lunch was Potato Leek Carrot Soup. This stuff is amazing. It’s soul-food and healthy.

P1013174

I also had one carrot w/ 1 TB peanut butter and 1 orange. Another scant TB of peanut butter may have snuck it’s way in today as well.

Ok..post to come tonight of our baking adventure. It’s gonna involve multiple kinds of chocolate and maybe, fingers crossed, cut out chocolate shapes.

How do you un-wind?

Tri Training–Week 2

October 26, 2009 · 2 Comments

Good morning…I don’t even know that I am convinced I am awake yet.

My tri training this week is gonna be a step-up–cause I have to. I only have 2 weeks (less than) til my tri next week. So what’s the go this week?

  • Monday: Run
    • 15 min run, 1 min walk, 10 min run, 5 min walk
  • Tuesday: Swim and Bike
    • 1.2 km swim (4 x 300m w/ 1 min rests)
    • Bike (10 min steady, 20 minutes of intervals: 2 min hard, 30 sec easy, 5 minute cool down)
  • Wednesday: Swim
    • 1.4 km swim (4x 350m w/ 1 min rests)
  • Thursday:  Bike and Run together
    • Bike 30 minutes and 5km run–gonna do them together
  • Friday: TEST RUN
    • 200m swim, 6km bike ride and 2km run–all in spandex baby
  • Saturday through Tuesday I am going to be away so it’s gonna be a lot of running.
    • Run 20 min run, 1 min walk, 6 min run, 5 min walk
  • Sunday: Run
    • 25 min run, 1 min walk, 10 min run, 5 min walk

So that’s my week workouts for ya. I am gonna be tired. My body is already tired. However, I LOVE the feeling of knowing that I am working my body in so many different ways. Hopefully I don’t fall over and pass out.

This morning I got up at 5am and frankly I haven’t gotten my body into going to sleep early enough to feel rested when I get up in the morning that early. I didn’t workout this morning..which is ok. I cranked out this awesome ricemeal (oatmeal) and a cup of tea

  • heaping 1/2 c. of rice flakes
  • 1 c. water
  • 1 tsp. chia seeds
  • 1 large banana
  • 1 TB sunflower butter
  • 1 tsp. psyllium husk

P1013164Have you ever trained for anything before? Did you stick to your program?

sssssllllloooowwww lane

October 21, 2009 · 16 Comments

This morning I PEELED myself out of bed at 5:30am.

The question always becomes..how do you stay motivated when training for something?

Answer: My grandma!

The Pink Tri that I am training for..which is November 8th–holy god 2 1/2 weeks away—is raising money for breast cancer research. My Grandma and apparently my great grandmother (didn’t know until today) both had breast cancer. My grandmother had a double mastectomy in the early 80’s and has struggled with intense shoulder pain and limited movement due to the surgery. SHE’S NEVER GIVEN UP!

Last night I wrote her this e-mail..of which promptly made me cry:

also wanted to tell you that I am running a triathlon (swim/bike/run) for you. It’s to raise money for Breast Cancer. I am going to put a sign on my shirt that says ‘For my Grandma Farm, because she never gave up’

I will be running for you. For all the pain you endured and for all the love that you’ve given. It’s Nov 5th..I just wanted you to know.

If my Grandma can do it… I can do it!!!!

I got to the pool, jumped in the SLOW land and got going. I had to do some pep-talk with myself last night because when I am trying new things or in new social sitatuations I always find a way to get out of it. NOT THIS TIME.

P1013129

The coach gave me some pointers. I didn’t have ANY of the equipment that I needed: paddle board, hand fins, fins, etc. However, I did ONE WHOLE HOUR of swimming. I may  have sat out for one lap and I may have been passed. I NEVER GAVE UP!

I really enjoyed swimming. It helped with the tightness in my hamstrings and I look forward to it again on Friday.

I powered up with an AWESOME Choco-tien Green Monster. I’ve been having one every morning.

  • 2 1/2 small organic banana
  • 1 tb cocoa powder
  • 1 tb psyllium husk
  • 1 tsp flax seed
  • 2 TB protein powder–natural
  • 2 1/2 c. spinach
  • 1 1/3 c. rice milk

P1013130P1013131

I have recruited TWO new people to join me in my race when I go home to America in 4 1/2 weeks. I’ll let you know later today..any guesses?

What thing in your life have you always wanted to try, but haven’t yet?

Apple Sauce

October 21, 2009 · 5 Comments

Apple Sauce
3 1/2 c.
‘don’t throw the sad apples away..sauce them’

P1013097

7-8 apples–granny smiths are the best. it’s also better if they’re a bit over the hill
1/2 c. water
1/2 TB salt

1. Find some ’sad’ apples and rescue them

P1013082
2. Peel, core and chunk up the apples into a large sauce pan
P1013083P1013085P1013086P1013087P1013096
3. Add about 1/2 c. water
4. Over a medium heat simmer/boil for about 30 minutes..or until apples are easily mashed with a fork. The softer the apples the quicker the cooking. make sure that there is enough water.

You can add pears to the applesauce if you’d like a complex flavour. You can also add cinnamon if you want. Knock yourself out!

Sludge? Algae? Mud?

October 20, 2009 · 5 Comments

This morning I cranked out a new Green Monster–it’s my week of Green Monsters.

I am not too sure what to call it… Sludge? Algae? Mud?

2 small bananas, 1/4 avocado

P1013111

Then…wait for it…1 TB of cocoa powder–not hot cocoa powder–the real unadulterated kind.

P1013112

1 tsp of psyllium husk, 1 1/4 c. of rice milk, 3 cups of spinach

IT WAS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!

P1013113

Next time I might add one more TB of the cocoa powder. I LOVED it. I would make it again for sure.

So..what would you call it? Sludge? Algae? Mud? Slime?

Green Husks

October 19, 2009 · 5 Comments

This morning I powered up with a Green Monster

3 very small organic bananas

P1013104

2 1/2 handfulls of spinach, 1 tsp flax seed and 1 tsp pysllium husk

P1013105

Psyllium Husk is great for intestines like mine :) Ones that need all the repairing help they can get.

Indeed, psyllium has long been recognized for its potential role in reducing blood cholesterol. Psyllium acts as prebiotics – aiding to heal the inner lining of the inflamed intestines.

Final product!

P1013107

It made about 2 wine glasses full. I love drinking my breakfast out of a wine glass. :) I snacked on an unpicture pink lady apple around 10:30am, but not before I downed a huge french press of Timor Coffee (aka crack) with about 1/2 c. or rice milk added.

P1013108

For lunch was left over lunch from yesterday: 50 g. of rice noodles and 1 c. of Meaty Marinara…recipe coming I PROMISE

P1013109

What is your favourite Green Monster or Smoothie?

Weekly Food for a girl on a budget w/ a funky tummy

October 11, 2009 · 5 Comments

Hey there,

I told myself this week that I was going to put myself on a budget. I honestly have never had to put myself on a budget before. However, now that I am going back to school :) I have to think about clamping down on spending.

This starts w/ food…well I have to eat. And I have to eat healthy—I can’t eat Dairy, Gluten or processed sugars. So, Ramen Noodles, cheap frozen meals, pizza, etc. OUT the window if not for my health..but for my waist as well.

So, how do you eat healthy and stay on a budget?

  1. First: Start with what you have.
  2. Second: Get some books, look up recipes, get inspired
  3. Third: Plan of attack
  4. Four: Shop w/ a list and don’t get distracted

So here’s my grid of what I’ve eaten today (Sunday) until Friday of this week.

menu planning

I have to admit, I like to cook. So I can throw things together. However, I KNOW that there are some of you who don’t have it that easy and/or don’t know where to begin.

Don’t panic here are some great sites which might help you with recipes:

  • My own recipes page — has everything labelled for Dairy/Candida/Veg/Vegan/Gluten Free
  • Tasty Kitchen — has gluten, dairy and sugar free tabs
  • Allrecipes.com –great place to punch in the ingredients that you have and things you don’t have…then it will crank out all the recipes which you can cook with.
  • Dawn @ Menu for the week is a great place to start. You even get a whole weeks worth of menus, awesome!
  • FeastontheCheap — GREAT recipes  broken down by cost.
  • MyRecipes — another great recipe website with tons different categories

Sometimes the hardest thing is to get started. I think that the best thing to do is to do things that you know and then start venturing out. If you haven’t or have loved cooking–don’t try to out do yourself. I think that many times, especially if you’re cooking for other people, it’s more that you’re cooking for them…not about blowing their socks off.

Enjoy planning this week, your food. I love planning food. Let me tell you, I spent about 1/2 as much money this week, because I have things planned out. Not only that, but it means that I only have what I need. Which reduces over-eating and eating when I shouldn’t.

So, what are you going to plan this week?

Bride to Be

October 10, 2009 · 1 Comment

Good Arvo…that’s what they’d say here in Oz.

This morning I woke up..kinda…and went on a gorgeous walk with my friend Sarah!

P1012920

Yeah, not a 6:45am person on a Saturday morning. We had a great conversation, as we always do. She’s such an amazing person and I adore her five year old son. He makes me smile pretty much all the time.

I then came home and was OVERWHELMED with the response to the RENEW Giveaway! If you haven’t entered yet–do. They’re being homemade by Angela @OhSheGlows and @GloBakery.

I then got breakfast ready for my friend Tara.

P1012922

She’s American and has lived in Australia for about 5 years. Last year she met an Australian boy and is getting married this year. We had gluten free pancakes w/ fruit and eggs.

P1012921P1012923

We talked about everything. Especially her wedding stuff :) I can’t make it to her wedding in January in the states :( But it was so nice of her to come and see me today on her short trip over to Perth from where she lives in Oz.

Off to a cafe to do some meal planning for this week–will blog what I decide later today:)

Then off to a haircut….what shall I do? I don’t have a huge attachment to my hair…

Who brings a smile to your face?

Power me up!

October 7, 2009 · 4 Comments

Hey there!

Man, I am still reeling from the awesomeness of getting accepted into the program of my choice!

Thanks so much for everyone’s positive comments and support. It helps in alleviating the blow of being a poor student :)

This morning I decided to power up with some savoury oats!

P1012895

Rice flakes (Can’t eat oats–it’s a Celiac thing) w/ .5 c. of mashed sweet potato, .25 c. chopped zuchi, s/p, 1 egg.

I have an INTERVIEW for an on-campus job in about 1 hour, that would help pay for my living expenses. It’s via skype…how progressive are they?

Wish me luck!

What did/are you going to have to for breakfast?

~M
