There is no doubt that everybody loves to eat and everyone loves food. Different cultures have different cuisines which reflect their customs and traditions. It seems like every person in the world has a certain level of love affair on food, but not everybody agrees on the myths surrounding it. Here is a list of the common food myths that have been debunked.
You can still save a moldy food. When you see molds on food, do not try to eat it. Other spiteful bacteria might be present on it and so, you must throw the moldy food into the trash bin.
It is okay to eat pizza in a box out of the trash. Experts say leftover pizza which has not been refrigerated within two hours can be detrimental to your tummy whether it has been in the garbage or not.
Following the 5 second rule. Considered as more of a joke than a myth, this rule must be scrapped. Bacteria can contaminate food within a split second when you drop your food on the floor.
Do not buy food that is beyond its “best before” date. Food items which are over their “sell by” dates are still safe to use as long as you consume them within 24 hours.
Thawing frozen food on the counter is safe. If you want your turkey to be infested with salmonella, this is the way to go. Thaw food properly and prevent bacteria from getting into your body, which can cause a host of diseases.
Hamburger shouldn’t be brown. When a burger patty is brown on the inside, don’t fret. It is still safe to eat. The red color of the meat is just a result of its exposure to oxygen. On the other hand, the brown color means the patty lacks oxygen but it doesn’t have any negative health effects.
Gum could stay inside your body for years. Gum can’t be digested by the body but it will eventually be thrown out through the anus.
Seafood is more dangerous than meats. Recent studies reveal that you have greater chances of being poisoned from eating meat than fish. However, it is still important to inspect seafood and meats before purchasing them to ensure safety.
Never swim for at least 30 minutes after eating. Experts say that you can swim after eating because there is enough oxygen in the body to supply the skeletal muscles and also to aid in digestion.
